No. Think of this work as a mashup of mentorship, guidance and girls empowerment coaching. I am not a licensed mental health provider, but have resources to connect you with a provider.
Girl Space ATX acknowledges gender as a fluid construct and welcomes all teens that identify as female. LGBTQ+ community welcome & affirmed.
It is recommended that you make it to as many sessions as possible in order to reap the full benefit of the program. With that being said, life happens and an occasional absence is reasonable.
Yes! Your teen can do a 2-session trial to see if the group feels good for them. When we do something new for the first time, it can be uncomfortable and awkward. In order to assess whether the group is a fit, it is encouraged that they have multiple experiences to draw from in order to make an informed decision on whether it's truly a fit or not.
Basic costs to run a business (eg. space rentals, insurance, art supplies, snacks, website, minimal facilitator income, marketing and advertising etc.). In addition to this, there are creative workshop collaborations with female-owned organizations, special guest speakers for parent gatherings and fun activities in-BETWEEN.
The teens will be "doing" a number of things simultaneously. We will acquaint ourselves through fun icebreakers, gather in circle and share our lived experiences, work through a curriculum that progresses through topics like: identity, self-confidence, pressure, friendships, self-care etc., and process those concepts by doing art or journaling (with a little scattering of bathing in nature through our walks to the creek). And finally, they'll engage in developmentally appropriate movement and breathwork as well as fun games to remind ourselves of the importance of play. Much of the space is teen-led to assure the needs of each member are being met. While these are the concrete activities they will be doing, there are many more things that are happening within themselves during this process - that is the real "doing" of it all.
Absolutely! There are a number of teens within Girl Space that have dyslexia and/or dysgraphia, so it isn't our first rodeo :) There is no reading aloud during Girl Space since it isn't a traditional classroom environment, but there is writing during journaling time. We can send you journal questions beforehand so your teen can dictate their answers to you and we'll paste the entry into their journal every gathering session. Another option is that they'll dictate to Chinny during journal time. Totally up to them to also keep it as discrete or loud and proud as they'd like it to be! And rest assured, we will always highlight how we're different and celebrate the beauty of it!
Yes, or at least as much you'd like to be involved. There will be Girl Space grown up gatherings 1-2x/semester to connect with one another (& Chinny) to discuss the general dynamics within the groups, shared challenges, and an opportunity for you to share wisdom and brainstorm challenges you may be encountering in your journey as a parent .
A sweet little spot in Central Austin or at a public outdoor location. All meeting locations will be shared with participants upon registration.
Although unlikely, the group could be cancelled if it doesn't meet the minimum requirements. In this event, you will be contacted and refunded 100% of your paid tuition as soon as possible.
